You know what you want.
You want to feel truly happy and at peace in your own skin, both when you’re around other people AND when you’re alone.
You want to express yourself freely, confidently and more in the moment.
You want to be able to manage your thoughts and emotions; to break free from the negative ones and focus on the positive ones.
You want to believe in yourself, in your abilities, decisions and potential.
You want these things more than anything!
So why are they so hard to achieve?
In short, it’s due to your mind.
You see, the nature of the mind is to analyse and to protect. To protect you (or really, to protect itself i.e. its sense of identity) from potential failure, judgement, loss or rejection.
Your mind is constantly comparing itself to others, and moving back and forth between self-righteousness, where it feels the need to justify and defend itself, and self-pity, where it feels hopeless and not enough, and therefore easily gives up.
This inconsistency of thoughts (and therefore feelings) is often what causes you to feel unstable, indecisive and overwhelmed.
It is also the main obstacle that is preventing you from fulfilling your deepest desires and goals.
What usually happens is this: you think about your desires, you write them down, visualise them, maybe even plan some steps to take towards them..
And for a short period of time, you feel motivated. You also have moments of feeling inspired by others who are on the same journey and who show you that it’s possible.
But then, when that motivation and inspiration fades away (maybe you have a bad night’s sleep, a bad experience, or you’re simply not in the mood to ‘work’ on yourself), this is when your mind convinces you to delay, to procrastinate or to give up.
Before you know it, you’ve let yourself down and you feel like you never really changed.
Clearly, a different approach is required. One that doesn’t rely solely on your mind.
Three key principles to fulfil your deepest desires
I’ve handpicked 3 key principles for you to follow that will best support you in fulfilling your desires (tried and tested!). Here they are:
1) Start now – if you always wait until you feel 100% ready or motivated to take action towards your desires i.e. to face your fears and do things differently, you won’t be getting anywhere.
It’s rare that you’ll ever feel 100% ready, because your mind will always seek out excuses and reasons to fear and doubt! Don’t let it hold you back.
Don’t wait for motivation either. Motivation will come from taking action and seeing progress, not the other way round! Take one, small, imperfect step now, and keep doing that! There’s really no such thing as perfection 😉
2) Be consistent – starting and stopping, and only taking action towards your desires when you feel like it is also not going to get you very far. In fact, it will only encourage your mind to convince you that you’re not capable of fulfilling them i.e. that you failed.
It takes consistency to form a habit and it takes consistency to break a habit! So naturally, in order to break your long-standing habits and patterns (that are holding you back) and replace them with new ones (that will support you and your desires), you must be consistent.
You must truly commit to your desires, on good days and bad days. Do this by reminding yourself daily of why they are so important to you. Commitment requires self-discipline, and this is what will allow you to override your mind when it gets scared, distracted or lazy.
3) Acknowledge your wider impact – your deepest desires come from your heart and soul (not your mind!). You feel them for a reason. You feel them because you are meant to fulfil them! Not only because you are worthy and capable of fulfilling them, but because of the impact they will have on everyone around you too.
You are impacting the world and creating a ripple effect whether you like it or not, through your daily thoughts, feelings and actions. Why not make your impact intentional?
It’s your responsibility to acknowledge your heart’s desires, to trust that you are meant to fulfil them (and that you’ll be guided to if you pay attention to your inner-knowing and to the opportunities around you!) and to take the necessary steps to do so.
I love these 3 principles as they have supported me on my own personal growth journey and continue to do so!
And whilst it is totally possible to apply these 3 principles on your own, I want you to know that you do not have to do it alone.
